Talks with Filmmaker Lloyd Kaufman '69 & Yale Press Authors; Alumni Running Group

Dear Yalies,
Thanks to those of you who volunteered for the inaugural Yale Day of Service. About 600 alumni (and guests) participated in one of the 17 volunteer activities in New York City. All our partner organizations greatly appreciated both the opportunity to meet Yale alumni and the contribution made by volunteers. Together we made a tremendous impact in New York City communities and demonstrated the spirit of Yale's longstanding tradition of public service. An extra big thanks to Ceu Martinez and Amanda Taffy, co-chairs of YAAMNY's Public Service and Social Justice Committee, for their leadership pulling together all the pieces. And congratulations to the following winners of the prize drawing:

- Aaron Shipp '96 * an iPod Shuffle (donated by YAAMNY)
- Linda Kofsky '75 * one free night at the Yale Club of New York City, including breakfast (donated by the Yale Club of New York City)
- Clark Jackson '97 MFA * a dinner for two at Bay Leaf Indian Brasserie(donated by Uday Gupta, Yale SOM '08)

As June approaches, we want to give you a heads up on several exciting events, including a talk on June 4 with Yale University Press Author Joshua Shannon on New York Art and the Rise of the Postmodern City and a talk on June 6 with James Leve on Kander & Ebb, the Duo Behind Cabaret and Chicago. Then on June 18 there will be a talk with filmmaker Lloyd Kaufman '69 about how to succeed in independent cinema. Kaufman helped launch the careers of Hollywood stars such as Kevin Costner, Samuel L. Jackson, Oliver Stone, Marisa Tomei, Robert DeNiro, and Carmen Electra, who had their first start in Kaufman's films.

These events all include a reception with an opportunity to meet and network with other Yale alumni. They all have limited capacity, so be sure to click on the respective Eventbrite links below to secure your seat(s) before tickets sell out.

Also, for those who run in New York, YAAMNY recently started an alumni running group to get Yalies together for group runs and/or train for select races, including the Iceland Marathon and Half-marathon this August (see details below). Feel free to join the group on Facebook to get updates on group runs and more information about the trip. Already 15 alumni have expressed interest in joining the trip, and we welcome runners of all ages and levels to join.

See you soon at an upcoming event or for an alumni group run!

May 2009 Newsletter Greeting

Dear fellow Yalies,

As we hope you've heard, Yale is hosting the inaugural global alumni Day of Service on May 16. If you have not signed up, we encourage you to do so by visiting the following site:

www.yaledayofservice.org

This is a great opportunity to meet fellow alumni while participating in Yale's long tradition of community service. In partnership with the Yale Club of New York City and other Yale groups, YAAMNY has  confirmed 17 organizations for a wide range of activities: cleaning up parks, serving food at a soup kitchen, painting/restoring a boat, service projects for children, and tutoring low-income families to name a few. There's bound to be something that meets your interest, so sign up soon before your preferred activity reaches capacity! Families and other guests are welcome to join you.

As an additional incentive, there will be prizes - including an iPod Shuffle - for several lucky volunteers whose names are drawn by activity leaders on May 16.

If you cannot donate your time or talent at one of the many Yale Day of Service volunteer activities, please consider a tax-deductible gift to sponsor another alum at sites that need supplies or fundraising. Go to http://yaamny-donation.eventbrite.com/ to make a contribution.

Meanwhile, this Saturday, join alumni at the Cherry Blossom Festival and/or the afternoon presentation by photojournalist and Yale alumna Scout Tufankjian '00, whose book Yes We Can: Barack Obama's History-Making Presidential Campaign covers Obama's historic journey from junior Senator to President of the United States. Scout was the only photographer to cover Obama's entire campaign. Be sure to sign up below for these events!

For the avid or aspiring runners among you, YAAMNY is organizing the first-ever alumni trip to Iceland for the August 22 marathon (includes half-marathon, 10K, and 3K). See below for more information and email me ( This email address is hidden from email harvesters via JavaScript ) by May 1 if you're interested in joining this trip (or a Yale Alumni Running Group).

We hope that one of these activities interests you, and we look forward to your participation in the inaugural global Yale Day of Service on May 16!

Warm regards,
My
President, YAAMNY

Editor's Note November 2008

Have you noticed the changing leaves are especially radiant this fall?  Perhaps the leaves are hanging on a little longer and the reds and ambers have just enough life in the leaves to glow.  Or perhaps they are resonating with the political moment, CHANGE.  Rebublican, Democrat or undecided all seem intent on the thought.  So perhaps the leaves are singing that message too.

I wonder sometimes how change became the banner of the two parties.  Wouldn't I rather see "Vote McCain for Paradise Now?"  Change only tells me what I'm leaving, not where I'm going.

Yale, when I arrived at 18, seemed immutable, monolithic and anti-change.   Hadn't it been as I found it for 300 years?   But having been involved with Yale now for 20 years, I've come to see the extent to which Yale is the result of an incredible diversity  of voices sounding and sometimes clamoring across time, space and context.  All change Yale in their own ways, big and small.

And it has been the commitment to the ideals of excellence, discernment and truth in those voices that has made Yale adapt so well and be as great as it is.  They may make a bad political bumper sticker, but those ideals make the change for the best at Yale, in NY and in the world.  YAAMNY exists to help in some small way make change for the for the better in NY.  And I hope you will make change yours and for the best on election day and every day in the communities where you live.
